From his enlistment in April of 1864, James is shown as "present" on the muster rolls up to December 15, 1864, except for July 1864 as he was listed as "Absent orderly at Provost Marshall's".

  James is listed as captured December 15, 1864, at Murfreesboro, Tennessee. He is not listed as returning to his regiment. It is assumed by James' brother, Edson Goit, that he died in a confederate prison camp.

Richard died before 1888 and was buried in Old Section of, Walkerton Cemetery, St. Joseph Co., IN. After her death, James Edson Poole married Mrs. Weatherall and they lived together less than a year. He then dated Mrs. Blackburn and they were about to get married when she got pneumonia and died. In Oct. 1931, James Edson Poole married Mrs. Mae Whiteside Roberts. She had several Whiteside children still living at home.
